We are often asked where the name ‘Sula’ comes from. The answer lies 40miles off the Butt of Lewis,

Sula is Gaelic for gannet and the island of Sula Sgeir has a special place not only in the seafaring history of the men of Ness on the Isle of Lewis but also in Catriona MacGeoch’s own family history. Her late father, James MacGeoch had long connections with Ness as the first photographer to go out to Sulaisgeir in the 1950’s and record the annual expedition.

Sulaisgeir is a photographic book of 130 black and white images taken by my father, who stayed with the Ness crew on Sulaisgeir on several occasions in the 1950’s.

The book has been compiled together with John Love and Finlay MacLeod and is published by Acair. Along with the many photographs there is an account written by James MacMeoch of his endeavours and also a copy of a letter written by him to Catriona’s mother, put into a bottle and thrown into the sea. There is an appreciation by John Love as well as a Gaelic introduction by Finlay MacLeod. The book intriguingly includes a CD of a unique sound recording made by my father of the men during morning worship in one of the stone bothies.

Exquisitely well printed by Acair with photographs that give a fascinating insight into life on Sulasigeir, the book can be purchased in hardback and softback by visiting website. ISBN 9780861523238

[Catriona – is it possible to include this on the online shop so people can buy from you direct – the publisher should be able to supply on a sale or return basis, or else put a link to the publisher’s retail site if there is one?}
